Croydon is a small inner-western suburb between Port Road and Torrens Road, a few kilometres from the city, best known for the Queen Street strip of cafes and shops near the railway station. It sits with West Croydon, Ridleyton and Brompton in a pocket that has changed a lot in twenty years, from workers' cottages and light industry to one of the more sought-after character areas on the western side of town.
The housing is mostly late-1800s and early-1900s stone cottages, symmetrical villas and bungalows on narrow blocks, many renovated with a modern living extension at the back. Carpet in these homes usually sits in two or three front bedrooms and sometimes a formal room, with boards or tiles through the new part. Owners who have restored a cottage tend to choose wool or good wool-blend carpet to match the period feel. Along Torrens Road and in the old industrial pockets there are newer townhouse groups with carpeted upstairs bedrooms and a flight of stairs, and a growing number of these are rentals.
Narrow cottage hallways concentrate every footstep down one strip of carpet, so Croydon's typical complaint is a dark lane through an otherwise clean room. Croydon questions
Yes, when it is done the wool way: a wool-safe pre-spray close to neutral pH, less water than a synthetic carpet would get, thorough extraction and quick drying with airflow. Over-wetting and harsh alkaline cleaners are what brown or shrink wool, not hot water extraction itself. We check the fibre before we start and tell you if any area needs a different approach.
Usually, yes. The grey is ground-in grit and oily soil rather than wear in most cases. We pre-spray the treads, agitate them and extract each step with a stair tool, which is slower than a room but gets into the nosings where the dirt collects. If the fibre tips are worn flat for good, the stairs will be clean but may still show the path, and we will say so before we begin.
