Carpet sanitising and deodorising with Carpet Rescue is an add-on to a hot water extraction clean, from $15 per room, and is included in every end of lease package. An anti-bacterial sanitiser is applied to the clean, damp pile and a neutralising deodoriser follows, so odours from pets, illness, smoke, damp or years of use are broken down rather than masked. Pet urine that has reached the backing needs the separate enzyme treatment.
What sanitising and deodorising actually do
Hot water extraction removes most of what makes carpet smell: the soil, the body oils, the food, the pet hair. What it does not always remove is the bacteria living in the pile and the odour molecules bonded to the fibre. A sanitiser is an anti-bacterial treatment applied to the clean pile to reduce that bacterial load. A deodoriser is a neutraliser that bonds with odour molecules and changes them, which is different from an air freshener that simply smells stronger than the problem for a day.
We apply both after the extraction pass, while the carpet is clean and damp, and groom them through the pile. The room should smell neutral once dry, not of fragrance.
When to add it
- Homes with dogs or cats, to deal with general pet odour in the pile (urine spots are a separate enzyme treatment).
- After illness, vomiting or an incontinence accident on the carpet.
- Rental changeovers, where the next tenant should not be able to smell the last one. It is included in our end of lease packages for this reason.
- Musty rooms, closed-up holiday homes and south-facing bedrooms that stay damp in an Adelaide winter.
- Smoke odour from cooking or cigarettes that has settled into the carpet.
What it will not fix
Deodorising treats the carpet. If the smell is coming from urine in the underlay, from a damp subfloor, from mould behind a wall or from a leaking pipe, treating the carpet surface will only mask it briefly. Urine needs an enzyme treatment that reaches the backing; damp and mould need the moisture source fixed, and a carpet that has been wet from a leak is a water-damage restoration job, which we do not do. We tell you on inspection which problem you have.
