West Lakes was built from the 1970s around a man-made rowing lake and canals in Adelaide's western suburbs, between Port Adelaide and the beach at West Lakes Shore. Westfield West Lakes, the former football ground at Football Park and the waterfront streets of lake-front homes define it, and it remains a comfortable, mostly owner-occupied family suburb.
West Lakes homes are mainly 1970s and 80s brick houses, many of them two-storey on the lakefront and the canal streets to get the water view, with carpeted bedrooms, stairs and often a carpeted upstairs living area. Newer townhouses and apartments have gone up near the shopping centre. Carpets tend to be good quality and well looked after, with a mix of older wool and newer solution-dyed nylon. Retirees and established families dominate, dogs that walk the lake path are common, and some homes are long-term rentals.
Lake-front and canal homes get a steady flow of fine sand and dust from the shore path and the salty air, and two-storey layouts concentrate wear on the stairs and upstairs hallway. Big north- and west-facing windows over the water fade and dry out carpet near the glass. In well-kept homes the issue is usually general dullness and traffic lanes after years of use rather than heavy stains, plus dog hair in the pile and the occasional accident. Winter humidity off the lake slows drying in rooms that stay closed.
We pre-vacuum thoroughly, including the stairs and the edges along the skirting where dust collects, then pre-spray traffic lanes and extract the whole area so it dries evenly. Stairs are cleaned by hand, step by step. Faded carpet near windows cannot be recoloured, but a clean removes the dull soil film so the contrast is less obvious, and we say so up front. For dog households we add an enzyme treatment on any spots and a deodorise. Opening the upstairs windows to the lake breeze gets most rooms dry within hours.
