Blair Athol is an inner-northern suburb straddling Main North Road, just north of Prospect and Kilburn, close enough to the city that its post-war homes have been steadily bought, renovated and subdivided. It is a mixed suburb: original 1950s houses, 1970s units, new two-storey townhouses on split blocks, and a growing number of young families and renters.
The older Blair Athol homes are brick or stone-fronted post-war houses with a carpeted lounge and bedrooms and often the original hallway runner replaced by wall-to-wall carpet. The townhouses built on subdivided blocks have hard floors downstairs and carpet upstairs, with a flight of stairs between. There are also groups of 1970s units and flats, many of them rented, with small carpeted bedrooms and living rooms. Carpet ranges from decades-old wool in the untouched houses to light grey synthetic in the new townhouses.
Townhouse stairs in Blair Athol wear a dark lane up the centre within a couple of years, and light grey carpet upstairs shows every mark. The small units have heavy traffic across a small area, so the carpet between the door, the kitchen and the bedroom greys quickly, and tenants moving out need a receipt for the agent. The older homes carry decades of soil and sometimes pet odour from previous occupants. Main North Road traffic brings fine black dust into the front rooms.

In units the whole floor can usually be done in one visit, with a dated receipt for the agent if it is an end-of-lease clean. Older homes get a longer pre-spray dwell and extra rinse passes, and a sanitise and deodorise where old odours are the problem. Everything is dried down hard with the extraction wand so the small rooms are usable again within hours.
