Windsor Gardens sits in Adelaide's inner north-east along the River Torrens Linear Park, between Klemzig and Gilles Plains, with Fosters Road and North East Road as its main spines and Gilles Plains Shopping Centre on its doorstep. It was built mostly in the 1950s and 1960s and has been quietly renewing itself with townhouses and new homes on subdivided blocks ever since.
The original homes are modest 1950s and 1960s brick or stone houses with a carpeted lounge, carpeted bedrooms and a central hall, many now owned by second or third generations or rented out. Newer townhouses and courtyard homes along the main roads have carpet in the bedrooms and hard floors through the open-plan living, with stairs in the two-storey designs. There are also older unit groups, mostly rented. Carpet ranges from original wool in the unrenovated houses to budget synthetic in the rentals and good quality nylon in the newer builds.
Because so many Windsor Gardens homes are close to the Linear Park, dogs are everywhere and the usual carpet complaint is pet urine and odour in a bedroom or the lounge. The older houses have narrow halls that wear a grey lane from front door to kitchen. Townhouse stairs wear on the treads, and the rental units need cleaning between tenants with a receipt for the agent. North East Road traffic puts fine dust into the front rooms, and leafy streets bring in mud and plane tree debris in winter.
Pet jobs get the full treatment: locate every affected spot, apply an enzyme product that breaks down the urine in the pile and backing, allow it to work, then hot water extract the whole room and finish with a deodorise so no patch is left smelling different. Hall lanes get a heavier pre-spray and extra passes. Stairs are cleaned by hand. Unit cleans between tenants come with a dated receipt. We vacuum thoroughly before anything gets wet so winter mud and leaf grit come out as dust rather than being spread.
