Cheltenham is a north-western suburb on Port Road between Woodville and Alberton, a few minutes from Port Adelaide. For decades it was known for its racecourse; that land is now the St Clair estate, which has added hundreds of new homes, apartments and townhouses beside the older streets of cottages and post-war houses that run back from Cheltenham Parade.
Cheltenham is two suburbs in one for carpet. The older part has stone-fronted cottages, 1920s bungalows and 1950s brick homes, many with original or second-generation carpet in the bedrooms and a lounge off the hallway, a mix of wool and older synthetics. St Clair is new: two-storey homes and townhouses finished in the last decade with light-coloured solution-dyed nylon carpet upstairs, carpeted stairs and tiled or timber-look living areas below. A large share of the St Clair homes are rentals, and the older houses are a mix of long-term owners and investors.
In the St Clair homes the pale upstairs carpet shows everything: a grey path up the stairs and along the landing, drink marks in the children's rooms, and the fine construction dust that still blows around a young estate. Tenants there need end-of-lease cleans with a receipt, and the stairs are always the hardest part. In the older houses the problems are age and layers of soil: flattened hallway carpet, a dark patch in front of the television, pet spots that have reached the underlay, and wool that has dulled over many years.
For new nylon we use a pre-spray that lifts oily soil from the lanes, agitate the stairs and landing, and extract thoroughly so the light colour comes back evenly rather than in patches. For the older homes we pre-vacuum slowly to lift decades of dry soil before any water goes on, test the fibre, and clean wool with the wool-safe method. Pet areas get an enzyme treatment that reaches the backing. End-of-lease cleans are done after the furniture is out, with a dated receipt emailed on the day of the clean.
