Golden Grove is a master-planned suburb in Adelaide's north-east, developed through the late 1980s and 1990s around The Grove shopping centre, Golden Grove Village and a cluster of secondary schools. It is a family suburb of larger two-storey and split-level homes on winding streets, with plenty of parks and a strong sense of being a settled community.
Golden Grove houses are big by Adelaide standards, with four or five bedrooms, formal and informal living areas, a theatre room and often an upstairs level reached by a carpeted staircase. Carpet runs through most of the bedrooms, the upstairs landing and often the formal lounge, while kitchens and family rooms are tiled. Much of the original 1990s carpet has been replaced with modern nylon or solution-dyed polypropylene, and families with teenagers, pets and busy weekends put real wear on it.
With more carpeted rooms than most homes, the problem is scale: five bedrooms, a landing and a staircase can all look tired at once. Theatre rooms collect snack spills and drink rings, teenagers' bedrooms collect everything else, and the stairs develop a dark lane down the centre of every tread. Pets that sleep upstairs leave hair and the occasional accident on bedroom carpet, and the formal lounge often shows sun fading along the window side that owners mistake for soiling.
