Munno Para is one of the fastest-growing parts of Adelaide's outer north, on the Gawler train line north of Smithfield, where established Housing Trust era streets meet a wave of new estates built since the 2000s. The Munno Para shopping centre and the Playford council's growth area give the suburb a mix of long-term residents, young families and investors.
The newer estates are full of single-storey family homes with tiled or vinyl-plank living areas and carpet in the bedrooms, usually builder-grade polypropylene or nylon in grey or beige. Older homes have carpeted lounges and hallways as well as bedrooms. A large share of the new builds are investment properties let through local agencies, and many first-home buyers are living with the carpet the builder chose. Pets, kids and busy households are the norm.
Builder-grade carpet in a new estate home shows wear sooner than people expect, with grey lanes at bedroom doorways and spots from kids' drinks within a couple of years. New-estate blocks are often still dusty from surrounding construction, and that red dust walks straight into bedroom carpet. In the rental stock, end-of-lease cleaning with a receipt is a constant request, and pet urine on bedroom carpet is common as more tenants are allowed to keep animals.
We vacuum thoroughly first to lift construction dust and dry soil, then pre-spray the lanes and treat spots before the hot water extraction, which flushes the fine dust that gives new carpet a dull look. Urine is treated with an enzyme product and the room deodorised. For tenants and agencies we work to the handover date and leave a dated receipt listing every room, and for new homeowners we can apply Scotchgard so the builder's carpet stays presentable for longer.
