Hawthorn is a small, leafy inner-southern suburb between Unley and Mitcham, wrapped around the Belair Road and Cross Road corner a short walk from Mitcham Square. It is quiet residential streets of character homes under big street trees, popular with professional families who want to be close to the city and the Mitcham schools, and it rarely has much for sale.
The houses are predominantly early-twentieth-century villas and 1920s bungalows, most of them extended at the rear and kept to a high standard. Carpet is usually confined to the bedrooms and perhaps a front sitting room, and in homes like these it is often wool, wool-blend or a quality cut-pile that was chosen to last and is expected to. Several of the older homes still have their original timber floors under the carpet, and owners are careful about moisture for that reason. There are also a few groups of 1970s units on the main roads with smaller carpeted rooms and a shared hallway.
Carpet in Hawthorn tends to be well looked after and simply due for a proper clean: dulled wool in a main bedroom, a lane from the hallway into the children's rooms, dents and a shadow where a bed or wardrobe has stood for years. The street trees are generous with leaf litter and fine dust, which tracks in and settles in the pile. Families with dogs have the occasional accident on a bedroom carpet, and because the carpet is wool, the wrong spot cleaner has often made a light patch worse than the original mark.
Wool and timber floors both call for controlled moisture, so we pre-vacuum thoroughly, use a wool-safe near-neutral pre-spray, keep the water down and extract hard so the carpet is damp rather than wet when we leave. Furniture dents are misted and groomed so the pile stands back up. Pet spots get an enzyme treatment that works on the backing before the room is extracted. We set the room up to dry with airflow so neither the wool nor the boards underneath stay damp.

Hawthorn questions
Yes, done with restraint. We use a wool-safe solution, less water than a synthetic carpet would get, and strong extraction so very little moisture is left in the carpet and none reaches the boards. We also dry the room with airflow before we leave. Flooding the carpet is what causes problems for wool and timber alike, and we do not do it.
Sometimes. If the spray only left detergent residue or lifted soil in a small area, a full-room clean evens it out. If the product has bleached or yellowed the wool, the colour change is permanent and we will tell you that on inspection rather than promise otherwise.
