Para Hills sits on the rising ground north-east of Mawson Lakes, developed in the 1960s and 1970s as an affordable family suburb, with the Para Hills shopping centre and plenty of parks and schools. It remains a practical, settled neighbourhood of long-term owners, growing families and a steady share of rentals.
Homes here are mostly single-storey brick or cream-brick houses on generous blocks, with carpeted bedrooms and a carpeted lounge or family room. Carpets range from original wool-blend loop pile in homes that have had the same owner for decades, to mid-range nylon replaced during renovations. Large households and backyard dogs are common, and because the suburb sits on slopes with a lot of open ground nearby, fine dust and dirt get walked in regularly.
