Salisbury East sits on the rising ground east of Main North Road, between Salisbury and Para Hills, with the Cobbler Creek Recreation Park on its north-eastern edge. Most of it was built through the 1970s and 1980s as a solid suburb of brick family homes on generous blocks, with schools, local shops and a mix of long-term owners and rentals.
Homes here are mostly brick veneer or solid brick from the 1970s and 1980s, often with a formal lounge and dining at the front and a family room at the back, three or four bedrooms, and carpet through all the living and sleeping areas. Some have been renovated with hard floors in the living room, leaving carpet in the bedrooms and hall. Carpet is usually mid-range nylon, and in the unrenovated homes it can be the original wool or heavy nylon laid decades ago. Rentals are common, often to families.
Carpet that has been in a Salisbury East home for twenty years carries years of soil in the pile: dull colour, a grey lane from the front door to the kitchen and darker patches where the lounge suite used to sit. The slope towards Cobbler Creek means homes on the higher streets collect more windblown dust. Dogs and cats leave urine patches and odour that comes back in summer.
