Blackwood sits in the Adelaide Hills foothills above Mitcham, around the Blackwood roundabout and railway station on the Belair line, with Belair National Park and Hawthorndene beside it. It is leafy and higher than the plains, with winding streets, big trees, older homes on sloping blocks and a cooler, wetter winter than the suburbs below.
Blackwood homes range from stone and brick houses built between the wars to 1960s and 70s family homes and newer builds tucked into the slopes. Carpet is common throughout, including in living areas that in flatter suburbs would have been tiled, and wool and wool-blend carpets are more common here than in newer estates, because many owners chose them for warmth. Split-level homes mean short internal flights of stairs and landings, and plenty of households have dogs that walk the national park trails and come home with wet paws.
The hills climate is the main thing. Shaded, tree-covered blocks and cold winters mean carpets dry slowly and can hold a musty smell if they get damp, and leaf litter, bark and gritty soil come in on boots and paws through autumn and winter. Wool carpets need gentler chemistry and careful moisture control or they can brown or shrink at the edges. Stairs and landings wear faster than any other part of the house because every trip between levels crosses the same few steps.
For wool and blends we use a wool-safe, pH-neutral pre-spray and keep moisture low through the extraction pass, then set up airflow so the carpet dries in hours rather than sitting damp overnight in a cold house. Grit gets a slow, thorough pre-vacuum, especially at the entry and the bottom of stairs. Stairs are cleaned step by step with a hand tool so each tread and riser is done properly. Where a carpet smells musty we deodorise after the clean, and we will tell you if the smell points to a moisture problem that cleaning alone will not fix.

Blackwood questions
Yes, when it is done with wool-safe chemistry and controlled moisture, which is how we do it. We test a hidden area first, keep the solution pH-neutral and make sure the carpet is left only slightly damp, with airflow to finish drying. Wool should never be soaked or cleaned with harsh alkaline products.
Hills homes do dry more slowly in winter. We extract as much moisture as possible on the day and recommend opening windows, running ceiling fans or putting the heating on low afterwards. With airflow most rooms are dry the same evening; a cold, closed-up room can take until the next morning.
