Hallett Cove is a coastal suburb in Adelaide's south, built mostly through the 1970s and 80s on the slopes above the Hallett Cove Conservation Park and its boardwalk, with the beach, the train station and the Hallett Cove Shopping Centre as its landmarks. Streets drop steeply toward the coast, and many homes have sea views and two storeys to catch them.
The typical Hallett Cove home is a brick family house from the 70s or 80s, and a good number are two-storey or split-level to use the slope, which means carpeted stairs, upstairs bedrooms and landings. Carpets are mostly synthetic, with some older wool, and bedrooms and the upper level are usually carpeted even when the ground floor has been tiled. It is a settled owner-occupier suburb with families, retirees and a noticeable share of dogs who walk the coast park every day.
Sand and salt air come with the location. Fine beach sand from the cove and the boardwalk works its way into entry carpets and up the stairs, and it is abrasive, so it dulls the pile wherever it collects. Salt-laden air leaves carpets feeling slightly tacky and attracting more soil. Two-storey living means stairs and the upstairs hallway take concentrated wear.
