Burnside sits at the foot of the Adelaide Hills in the eastern suburbs, around Burnside Village and the leafy streets that climb towards Hazelwood Park and Waterfall Gully. It is one of the most established parts of Adelaide, with large blocks, mature street trees and homes that have often been owned by the same family for decades.
The housing stock here is mostly older and well built: stone villas, 1920s and 1930s bungalows, and larger post-war homes that have been extended over time. Wool carpet is far more common than in newer suburbs. Many bedrooms, formal lounges and upstairs landings have dense wool twist or wool loop pile that was chosen to last, and in some houses it is twenty years old and still structurally sound. Living areas are often polished boards with carpet kept to the bedrooms, hallways and stairs.
Wool is the main thing to get right in Burnside. Over-wet it, run the water too hot or use the wrong chemistry and it can brown, shrink at the edges or develop watermarks. The other common issue is slow, gradual soiling rather than one disaster: traffic lanes on the hallway and the path from bed to door, greying around doorways, and furniture indentations in a formal lounge that has been arranged the same way for years. Older homes near the Hills also hold winter damp, so carpets dry slowly if they are left wet.

That means a thorough pre-vacuum to lift dry soil, a wool-safe pre-spray at the right pH, controlled water temperature and a hot water extraction pass that pulls most of the moisture straight back out, followed by extra dry passes on the traffic lanes. Furniture marks are groomed while the pile is damp so the fibres stand up again. On older carpet we tell you honestly what will lift and what is permanent wear before we start, and Scotchgard is available afterwards to slow the next round of greying.

Burnside questions
Yes, when it is done with wool in mind. We use a wool-safe pre-spray, keep the water temperature controlled and extract thoroughly so the backing never sits wet. The result is a clean carpet without the browning, shrinkage or watermarks that come from over-wetting. If a section is too worn to clean safely, we say so before we start.
Usually most of it. A traffic lane is a mix of embedded soil and crushed pile. The soil lifts with pre-spray, agitation and extraction; the crushed fibres partly recover with grooming. On very old wool, some of the lane is permanent wear and we will tell you that honestly on inspection.
