Morphett Vale is one of the biggest suburbs in Adelaide's outer south, spread across the slopes between Main South Road and the Southern Expressway, with Woodcroft and Reynella on its edges. It grew quickly from the 1960s through the 1980s as a family suburb, and it still is one, with a large stock of brick homes on generous blocks and a steady mix of owners, long-term tenants and first home buyers.
Most Morphett Vale homes are single-storey brick houses from the 60s to the 80s, often with three or four carpeted bedrooms and a carpeted lounge or formal living room off the entry. Many carpets are hard-wearing nylon or polypropylene in mid-tone colours chosen to hide wear, and quite a few are the original or second carpet still doing service. Newer townhouses and units add stairs and smaller rooms. Dogs and cats are common, and a good share of houses are managed rentals with regular tenant changeovers.
With families, pets and long carpet lives, the usual Morphett Vale carpet is tired rather than ruined: grey traffic lanes from the front door to the kitchen, a darker patch where the family sits in front of the television, and bedroom carpets that have gone flat and dull.
