Quick answer
Hot water extraction (steam cleaning) is the deeper clean: it rinses soil out of the base of the pile and removes it in the waste water, and it is the method most carpet manufacturers recommend for periodic cleaning. Dry or low-moisture cleaning (encapsulation, bonnet, absorbent compound) dries in one to two hours and suits light maintenance cleans, carpet tiles and situations where the carpet cannot be wet. Steam cleaning dries in 4 to 8 hours.
The industry term is hot water extraction. Hot water and a rinse solution are sprayed into the carpet under pressure and a powerful vacuum pulls the water, the loosened soil and the detergent back out in the same pass. Almost no actual steam is involved. Done with a pre-vacuum, a pre-spray that has had time to work and thorough extraction, it removes soil that has settled at the base of the pile and in the backing, and it leaves very little residue behind.
Dry carpet cleaning is a family of low-moisture methods. Encapsulation sprays a polymer solution that crystallises around soil as it dries and is then vacuumed away. Bonnet cleaning runs an absorbent pad over the carpet surface on a rotary machine. Absorbent compound methods spread a damp powder that is brushed through the pile and vacuumed out. Some franchise systems combine these under their own brand names. All of them use a fraction of the water of hot water extraction and dry in an hour or two.
| Hot water extraction (steam) | Dry / low-moisture | |
|---|---|---|
| Depth of clean | Deep: rinses the base of the pile and removes soil in the waste water | Surface to mid-pile; soil is encapsulated or absorbed and vacuumed |
| Drying time | 4–8 hours typical | 1–2 hours |
| Pet urine | Needed: enzyme pre-treatment then extraction flushes the backing | Cannot reach the backing; masks the smell at best |
| Set-in stains and traffic lanes | Best results, with pre-spray and agitation | Lightens; heavy lanes often remain |
| Residue | Low when properly rinsed and extracted | Encapsulation low; bonnet and shampoo methods can leave residue that resoils |
| Manufacturer warranties | Usually the specified method for periodic cleaning | Often accepted for maintenance between deep cleans |
| Carpet tiles / glued-down office carpet | Fine with controlled moisture | Well suited |
| Wool | Fine with wool-safe chemistry and controlled moisture | Fine; the lower moisture is a plus |
We use hot water extraction on almost every job, with less water and more extraction passes where the situation calls for it (carpet tiles, wool, apartments with poor airflow). If a job genuinely suits a dry method better, we will say so.

Common questions
No. Hot water extraction done properly, with the right chemistry and thorough extraction, is the method most carpet manufacturers specify. Problems such as shrinkage, browning or mould come from over-wetting and slow drying, not from the method itself.
For light soiling and maintenance, yes, and it dries fast. It cannot rinse the base of the pile or the backing, so it struggles with pet urine, heavy traffic lanes and set-in stains.
Most specify hot water extraction for periodic deep cleaning, often every 12 to 18 months, and accept low-moisture methods for maintenance between deep cleans. Check your warranty booklet if you still have it.
Some low-moisture methods, especially bonnet and shampoo cleaning, leave detergent residue in the pile that attracts soil. Encapsulation is less prone to it. A proper rinse-and-extract clean resets the carpet.
