A fresh puppy accident is fixable with paper towel and patience. A spot the cat has used for a year is a different problem that lives in the backing and underlay. This guide covers both.

Quick answer
For a fresh accident: blot up as much as possible with towels, flush with cool water and blot again, then apply an enzyme cleaner, let it dwell as directed and blot dry. Never use heat, ammonia or bleach. The smell comes back after cleaning because urine salts remain in the carpet backing and underlay and reactivate with humidity; getting rid of them needs enough enzyme solution to reach the backing and then extraction, which is what a professional pet urine treatment does.
Carpet is a sandwich: the pile you see, a woven backing, the underlay, and the floor. Urine goes through all of it. As it dries it leaves urine salts and uric acid crystals in each layer. Cleaning the pile removes the top layer of the problem and the smell improves for a while, then a warm day or a humid winter morning adds moisture, the crystals dissolve again and the smell returns. The only way to stop it is to break the crystals down where they are and remove the residue, which means enough enzyme solution to reach the backing and then extraction.
Animals are creatures of habit, so the spot you found usually has neighbours: along the skirting, under a window, behind a door, in the corner of a spare room. Old spots show as a slightly darker or yellowed area, feel stiff, and smell strongest when you kneel. A UV torch in a dark room makes dried urine fluoresce and is the quickest way to map a room. We do this on the walk-through before treating, because treating one spot in a room with five does not fix the room.
Professional treatment saturates each affected area with an enzyme solution, lets it dwell, then hot water extracts the whole room and deodorises. With us it is an add-on of $40 per affected room on top of the room clean. If the urine has rotted the underlay or reached the subfloor, we will tell you; that is a flooring repair, not a cleaning job.

Common questions
On a fresh spot in synthetic carpet it can neutralise some surface odour, but it does not reach the backing and underlay where most of the urine ends up. For anything older than a few hours, an enzyme cleaner is the right tool, and for repeated spots, professional treatment.
Cleaning adds moisture, which dissolves the dried urine salts in the backing and releases the smell again. It is a sign the urine is deeper than the pile and needs an enzyme treatment that reaches the backing, followed by extraction.
By the darker or yellowed patch, by stiffness in the pile, by smell at carpet level, and most reliably with a UV torch in a dark room, which makes dried urine fluoresce.
Yes, but cat urine is more concentrated and cats return to the same spot, so there are often many layers. It takes more solution and dwell time than a dog accident and sometimes a second treatment.
Only when urine has saturated it repeatedly over a long time and the foam itself has broken down. Most pet-affected rooms can be treated in place. We tell you on inspection if a room is past that point.
