Quick answer
Carpet cleaned by hot water extraction usually takes 4 to 8 hours to dry. Synthetic carpet on a warm, dry day with windows open can be dry in 3 to 4 hours; thick wool carpet in a closed room on a cold, humid Adelaide winter day can take 12 hours or more. Good airflow (open windows, ceiling fans, air conditioning on dry or heat) is the biggest factor you control. You can walk on it in clean socks straight away; wait until it is fully dry before putting furniture back or letting pets on it.
| Situation | Typical drying time |
|---|---|
| Synthetic carpet, summer, windows open, fans on | 3–4 hours |
| Synthetic carpet, mild day, normal ventilation | 4–6 hours |
| Wool carpet, mild day, good airflow | 6–8 hours |
| Any carpet, cold wet winter day, house closed up | 8–12 hours or more |
| Heavily soiled carpet needing extra rinse passes | Add 1–2 hours |
| Pet urine treatment (more solution to reach the backing) | Add 1–3 hours in the treated areas |
We groom the pile after cleaning so the fibres stand up and dry evenly, and we will set fans up where the home has them.
You can walk on freshly cleaned carpet straight away in clean socks or bare feet; avoid shoes, which carry soil back onto the damp pile. Put furniture back once the carpet is fully dry, and if you must move something heavy sooner, put foil, plastic or wax paper under the legs so timber stain and metal rust do not transfer into the damp carpet. Keep pets off until dry, mainly so they do not track dirt in and because damp carpet is where a dog will re-mark a treated spot.
If carpet is still damp after 24 hours, smells musty, or shows brown lines along seams and edges (wicking and browning), too much water was left in it or the room was sealed. Browning on wool is the classic sign of over-wetting with a harsh cleaner. Opening the house up and running fans usually finishes the job; if it stays damp beyond 48 hours there is a risk of mould in the underlay and it needs drying equipment. Proper extraction is the prevention: a carpet should feel damp like a wrung-out towel when the cleaner leaves, never wet.

Common questions
Yes, in clean socks or bare feet. Keep shoes off so you do not carry soil onto the damp pile, and wait until it is fully dry before moving furniture back.
Once it is fully dry, usually 4 to 8 hours. If something has to go back sooner, put foil or plastic under the legs to stop stain or rust transferring into the damp carpet.
Either too much water was left in it or the room was closed up with no airflow. Open windows, run fans or air conditioning and it should finish. Carpet still damp after 48 hours risks mould in the underlay and needs drying equipment.
Yes, if the air is moving. Reverse-cycle heating with internal doors open and a fan running dries carpet well; a radiant heater in a closed room does little.
Yes, typically one to two hours, because very little water is used. The trade-off is a shallower clean that cannot rinse the backing.
