- Use a vacuum with a good filter and empty or change it often; a full bag or bin halves the suction.
- Mats at every external door, and shoes off if you can bear it, remove most of the grit before it reaches the carpet.
- Blot spills immediately with cool water; do not scrub or heat them.
- Move furniture a few centimetres now and then so the same fibres are not crushed for years.
- Have pet accidents treated promptly rather than saving them up for the annual clean.
